Ectopic Pregnancy

I’ve created this blog as a way of therapy in dealing with a recent ectopic pregnancy and surgery. Below is a backstory of what we went through.

On the morning of November 5th my husband rushed me, with our 2.5 year old daughter Frida to Lower Hutt Hospital with extreme abdominal pain. I was 6 weeks pregnant. My husband and I were trying for our 2nd baby, and it happened on our very first try. I knew I was pregnant almost immediately. I had so many symptoms really early on. We were excited.

After blood tests and 3 separate ultrasounds I was diagnosed with what they expected; And ectopic pregnancy. Where a fertilized egg implants instelfs somewhere other than the uterus. The egg planted itself in my right fallopian tube. The tube had ruptured and I was bleeding internally.

I was rushed to emergency surgery where I went under General anesthetic and was given keyhole surgey. They removed my right fallopian tube including the fertilized egg.

I stayed in hospital overnight as my blood pressure kept dropping and my heartbeat was racing.

I was told by the doctor the next day that they couldn’t find any reasoning behind the ectopic. Often there is a reason, like smoking, taking the morning after pill, scarring from a c section or an infection. Nothing that relates to my situation at all. They couldn’t find a reason.

This is good news, cause it should mean I can have a normal, healthy pregnancy again. Before my operation when the doctor was telling me what would happen in surgery she said that once someone has had an ectopic pregnancy, the chances of i happening again increase slightly. After the operation she said I don’t have less or more chance of it happening again as there was nothing that caused it . My other fallopian tube is fine, my ovaries are good.

Recovery at home took some time and I am still dealing with the aftermath. A few things happened that set me back. A week after the operation the thickened lining in my uterus that happens to prepare your body for pregnancy shed, so I bled, a lot. So much so that I almost passed out.

I am almost 2 weeks post op and am feeling a little more like myself. This blog will be a way for me to get through the emotional toll of what happened rather than the physical.

I also hope it can help with anyone else experiencing pregnancy loss. Mine is a little different, it’s rare and quite an extreme way to miscarry, but any type of pregnancy loss is painful and can be awfully isolating. I’m hoping that while writing out my thoughts helps with my healing process, it could possibly help anyone else going through a similar situation to learn they are not alone.
